Chapter Three
To this day I still can’t believe what I did on the Greyhound bus. In the heat of the moment, it felt good. But after it kicked in, I felt like a hoe. I mean, I let two random guys, who I knew very little about, fuck me. I didn’t know if they had STD’s, HIV, or any other life threatening diseases. Throughout the whole day all sorts of crazy thoughts ran through my mind, mainly getting revenge on Damon. For a whole month, I cried and barely ate anything. Even though revenge was sweet, I still had no man to love me. I started to examine Damon and our relationship and tried to figure out what went wrong. I tried hard to figure out what I did wrong that would make Damon abuse my heart?
I remembered every agreement we ever made, every time he made me smile, all the times he told me he loved me, and the night he broke my virginity. The thoughts played in my mind over and over again like a scratched CD, but I knew deep down inside that I had to move on and be a different woman, a stronger woman, a better woman. Sometimes Tamika and I would talk on the phone late about Damon and I breaking up and what I did on the Greyhound bus. Every time I’d think about it or talk about it, I would break down crying because I couldn’t believe how I’d downgraded myself as young woman. Tamika told me to not let it get me down. She reminded me how I had to be strong and work on myself.
When I got home from the mall on a Tuesday afternoon, I walked in the kitchen only to find a letter from Grambling State on the table. I opened it and realized it was an acceptance letter. Just then my mom walked in. She saw the little smile on my face and immediately knew what it was about. She was really happy for me. I shared her enthusiasm, but knew I wouldn’t be able to focus as long as Damon was there. She must’ve sensed my uneasiness as she motioned for me to take a seat at the table. She gingerly poured up two tall glasses of sweet tea which served as sort of a calling card for those deep down mother-daughter heartfelt discussions. She always had a special knack for getting me to open up about situations.
“Yes baby. Yes. I knew it was just a matter of time! Why are you not excited?”
“I am happy, it’s just that…..” my voice trailed off.
“What is it? Is it because Damon is there? Look honey, this means a new beginning for you baby girl. Don’t you see? You can get out of this city and be somebody one day. I am so proud of you and I know your father is too. He’s probably smiling down from the heavenly skies right now.”
“Thank you so much mom. I can see his smile too it’s just….
